Hoes

Hoes, or garden hoes, are hand tools that are used in gardening and planting. Hoes are made from a sharp blade that can cut through soil and a handle for the gardener to hold. The blade of the gardening hoe is made from strong metal material such as iron, steel or aluminum. On the other hand, the handle of the garden hoe can be made of wood, so as long as it's comfortable to hold to the person gardening. Hoes are used to remove weeds and unwanted crops, agitate the surface of the soil around plants, pile the soil around the base (hilling), create furrows and trenches for planting seeds and bulbs, along moving various gardening materials and digging.

Choosing Hoes For Your Garden

There are many hoes to choose from in garden supplies and the different varieties each have their own purposes. Some types of blades are shaped differently, some even perform multiple functions. For example, a collinear hoe has a sharp and narrow blade that is used to slice weeds just by skimming ofer the surface. This type of blade would not be suitable for moving or chopping, however. A Dutch hoe is a different design allowing the blame pull through the soil and cut weeds underneath the surface. Gooseneck garden hoes have a forged beveled blade (resembling a goose) and are used for chopping, weeding and making furrows.

Two company brands to look for when shopping for a garden tool hoe include Warren, which makes Gooseneck garden hoes and a Rogue garden hoe. Warren's hoes have coated hardwood handles and can be used point up or point down for different purposes. Rogue hoes are cut directly from tempered steel of an agricultural disc blade, which makes them more durable than average, up to three times the life of an ordinary product the company claims.
