Edgers
Edgers, also called lawn edgers or stick edgers, is a tool used in lawn care to separate a lawn from a paved surface, such as a walk way or sidewalk. Edgers help do this process cleanly, by finely mowing grass and clearing the concrete path. Using edgers lets homeowners put a clear separation between the lawn and the walkway, giving an attractive look that could not be done by simply going over the border and walkway with a mower. This would result in low growing grass that hangs, giving the yard a ragged appearance. (Which the neighbors will certainly notice and mock!)
Types Of Edgers
Edgers may be manual or automatic. The motor on a lawn edger may be a two-stroke gasoline motor or an electric motor. A manual edger for a lawn has a broad blade that is attached to a long handle, which the operator then uses to drive the blade into the turf. The blade may also have a flat top on it to let the operator step on the blade, driving it deeper into the turf. There are also rotary lawn edgers and edgers with rotating wheel blades.

Gas powered lawn edgers trim the edges of lawns just like manual edgers, but these devices consist of an engine, belt tensioner, pulleys and a blade. They are more powerful than push edgers or stick edgers, and work differently than electric lawn edgers. A gas lawn edger uses its extra tools to go deeper into the grass and gain more revolutions-per-minute. Some gas lawn edgers also have a “robot head”, which is a part that adjusts the pitch of an edger head between horizontal and vertical. Gasoline lawn edgers operate with a drive system that is powered by a belt drive from the two pulleys, one for the engine and the other located on the blade head. Different companies that sell gasoline lawn edgers may use different drive systems, though they all use gasoline power.
Which Edger Company Has The Edge?
Several companies sell edgers and many of these offer edges with different drive systems. King O'Lawn, along with Husqvarnaa use a unique structure in their edges that is not found in more common company products. The Black & Decker lawn edger has a 7.2 amp motor and battles even the toughest weeds and grass. The Craftsman lawn edger and mini-tiller features a 4-cycle engine meaning there is no need to mix oil and gas. The Power trim lawn edger offers a whole host of features including single lever blade clutch, depth control and a 4 wheel chassis, while the Wal-Mart electric lawn edger has a different electrical process altogether. What is the worlds' number one lawn edger? While several companies have been mentioned (Tanaka, Agri-Pacific and MacGregor Industrial) the best choice is the edger that works for your yard and falls in your price range.
